The Ministry of Industry has been tasked by the leadership in The
Kingdom of Bahrain to probe and facilitate practical means towards the
creation of an innovative industrial environment.
An environment in which continuous improvement in productivity and
efficiency would prevail in industry.
Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa Award for Excellence serves exactly
this purpose with its criteria and conditions.
The criteria cover a wide range of evaluation techniques including;
quality control, improvement in productivity, employee relations,
bahrainisation and environmental concerns, all considered factors of
industrial performance.
I urge therefore, all industries operating in the Kingdom of Bahrain to
take advantage and enroll in the Awards qualifying process.
We have prepared this guide as an aid to understand, measure, and shed
light on relevant conditions for the Award, geared for all industrial
establishments, eager and striving to, effectively develop and progress in
today's industrial environment.

The Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa Award for Excellence in Industry aims
at motivating the industrial sector to further increase its competitive structure
through the improvement of performance.This can be achieved by adopting
the latest standards of quality,efficiency and productivity,and by stimulating
competition among manufacturers.
- Terms of Participation in the Award
- An applicant company must hold an industrial license issued by the
Ministry of Industry.
- All large,medium and small enterprises can be enrolled and will be
classified by their number of employees:

| Large-scale industry |
:More than 150 employees |

- Applicants must complete the forms and assist the Awards Team in verifying information.
- The Award is granted for the main and supporting industrial activities or industrial services operating under various industrial licenses.
- Upon the announcement of the Award,interested enterprises can notify the Ministry of their intent to participate.Accordingly,the Award Team will visit the enterprise,collect and verify information required.
- Decision will be based upon the information collected by the Award Team.
Assignment of marks will be on the basis of the criteria adopted by the Award,and explained by the team during the visit.
- Award categories for industrial sector cover small,medium and large scaleIndustries.
- Awarded companies may use the logo of the Award on their stationery and advertisements throughout the Awards three-year term.Companies may
also hoist the Flag of the Award at their head offices.
- His Highness the Prime Minister,Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa,will present the Award at a ceremony specially held for this occassion.
- First : Production & Sales Promotion
- Production Performance:
An applicant must be able to show an outstanding increase in production,
indicating the trend over the last three years.An applicant must submit
production figures for the past three years.The first year will be the base
year,the second and third will show the overall increase in output,as well as
the increase in output per employee.Judges will compare the increase in
production performance with other organisations engaged in the same line
of industry.
- Sales Performance:
An outstanding increase in sales in relation to the size of the enterprise is the
basis.An applicant must submit sales figures for the last three years.The first
year will be the base year for measuring the increase in sales for the second
and third years.
- Expansions and Upgrading:
For expansion of production lines or upgrading of products or machine,an
applicant may present a detailed statement of the enterprise 's expansion.The
statement must indicate the techniques used for the upgrading of products,
machinery or equipment.

- Second : Management and Quality
- Planning:
An applicant should explain the existing,short-and long-term development
plans and programmes.
- Structural and Financial Organisation:
An applicant should submit the organizational chart together with relevant
position descriptions.An applicant must also present detailed explanation of the
final accounts,mode of auditing and a copy of the audited final accounts by an
auditor.A small-scale enterprise with no audited final accounts may present its
own accounting procedure.
- Marketing Techniques:
An applicant must describe marketing techniques adopted by the enterprise
whether through advertising campaigns,penetration of new markets,or change
in product design,packing,etc.
- Quality Control:
An applicant must be able to demonstrate the enterprise 's quality control
standards and the achievement thereof in relevant areas.An applicant must
present a copy of the enterprise 's ISO certification,if any exists,or if he or she
is in the process of preparing for ISO quality certification,the applicant may
indicate the expected date of obtaining such certification.

- Third : Environment
An applicant must be able to establish that the enterprise adheres to all
environmental regulations applied in the Kingdom of Bahrain,and relevant to
the enterprise 's industrial category.
- Waste Disposal:
An applicant must be able to show the method by which all types of waste are
disposed of.An applicant must establish that the enterprise adheres to the
environmental regulations of the Kingdom of Bahrain.Consideration will be
given to the difficulties,if any,of the application of environmental protection
rules in so far as they are relevant to the enterprise's nature of business,
products or processes.
- Handling of Materials, Equipment and Products:
An applicant must be able to explain how materials,equipment and products
are handled and how such handling is compatible with the environmental rules
and regulations applied in the Kingdom.

- Fourth : Safety and working atmosphere
- Safety Regulations:
An applicant must prove that his/hers enterprise adheres to the statutory safety
regulations applicable to the enterprise 's Industrial nature.
An applicant must indicate the total number of man-hours over the last three
years and highlights the number of accident-free man-hours completed over
the period of time indicated.
- Factory Design, Handling Procedure and Environmental Impact:
An applicant must be able to present a clear factory layout highlighting safety
precautions as approved by the Directorate of Civil Defence,together with the
handling procedure of materials used in the production process and impact
thereof on the business operation and work force.

- Fifth : Trading and Bahrainisation
An applicant must provide full particulars of the enterprise 's in-house
training facilities and the arrangements it makes for off-site training of
personnel,indicating the number of training opportunities provided for
Bahrainis.In particular,an applicant must provide specific details of the
enterprise 's current level of Bahrainisation,future plans to increase
Bahrainisation and the promotional opportunities provided for Bahrainis to
assume higher managerial positions.
- Sixth :Contribution to Social Activities
A participant must show contribution figures allocated for charity and social
issues and donations granted to Universities and other educational institutes or
grants provided to national events and festivals,geared for;welfare,social
activities,sports,cultural programmes,and similar activities.
