Functions of the Industrial Areas Directorate include overseeing the industrial plots of land that are made available by the Government for industrial investment. The Directorate also endeavors to generate a new inventory of such land by proposing new locations for this purpose.

There are ten purpose-built industrial areas operating under the direct control of the Industrial Areas Directorate. The areas are mostly provided with the basic services such as roads, electricity, sewage systems, water and telecommunications. The total space of these areas is 480 hectares, plus a reclaimed area of 45 hectares, to the west of the Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Company (ASRY).

  Major industrial Areas
  • Mina Salman Industrial Area
  • This is the first industrial area that was established in the early 1960's. It is adjacent to the main port of Bahrain and is equipped with all basic facilities and industrial activity associated services. Some of the important industries in this area include sponge, paints, plastics and air-conditioning equipment.

  • North Sitra Industrial Area
  • A typical investment area, which, together with the South Head Industrial Area after operation, will lay the foundation for a promoted industrial base in Bahrain that will be suitable for the new century. This area, too, is provided with all essential amenities and services and is neighboured by a deep marine channel, a service pier and a gas distribution station feeding heavy industries such as GARMCO, as well as small and medium enterprises.

  • South ALBA Industrial Area
  • This area has derived its name from Aluminium Bahrain, the first aluminium smelter of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region. It is provided with all necessary infrastructural services. Some of the industries in this area which include cables and wheels, are self-fed while others are integral to the aluminium smelter, such as coke calcination. Other industries include paper tissues, textiles and copper tubing. The total space of this area is more than 180 hectares.

  • South Hidd Industrial Area
  • This industrial estate has an area of 650 hectares of which 240 hectares will be completed in the first phase and will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructural requirements of industrial investment. Front-end designs have been completed while building, construction and public utility plans are in hand. The most important factor in this area is the proposed new port which will be the core of Government plans designed to create a transformational change to Bahrain's industrial developmental vision, capitalizing on the country's highly sophisticated, world-class infrastructural and telecommunications technologies.

This project is located in an area of shallow waters at the northeastern corner of Bahrain. The area is linked to the Island of Muharraq by a road originally constructed to serve the Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Company (ASRY), and is only a few kilometers from both Bahrain International Airport and Mina Salman Port. It is relatively far from residential areas and it has easy access to the national road network.

Upon completion the project will provide a total of 640 hectares of industrial estates. At the initial phase of the project, an area of 247 hectares will be provided with all services. It is anticipated that the first phase of the project will meet the demand on industrial plots for a period of 10 years, at a rate of 24 hectares per year.

This new industrial state will be provided with all services required by industrial installations, including a separate gas network. It is anticipated that the new area will attract new medium and small, high technological, environment friendly, industrial enterprises. A marine jetty will be allocated for projects of marine operations, in addition to an area for warehousing, storage and distribution.

The project will be implemented on three phases, as follows :

  • Phase One
  • The area of this 246 hectares excluding the existing Gulf Industrial Investment Company (GIIC) housing site. Of this area, nearly 92 hectares will be allocated for car parks and other facilities, including a 10-hectare water treatment plant, a 15-hectare services corridor and power plant. The remaining are of 160 hectares will be available for industrial plots.

  • Phase Two
  • This phase will comprise the reclamation of the area between Phase One and ASRY, GIIC and other land within the basin situated in the western side. This will provide industrial plots with sea frontage. The total area of this phase is 196 hectares, including a small already reclaimed site of not more than 5.4 hectares. Nearly 53 hectares of this area will be reserved for basic facilities, roads and car parks, while the remaining area will be available for industrial plots.

  • Phase Three
  • This phase will comprise the development of the sites east of GIIC along the dredged channel, while all the work associated with port should have been completed and the areas of various cargo operations constructed. The area of this phase, excluding the new port, is 136 hectares. It is the Ministry's plan to construct large warehouses related to the port or downstream industries with GIIC products as feedstock.

Other industrial areas include Ma'ameer, North Refinery, Sitra Roundabout, Arad, Shaikh Hamad Bridge Junction and Hafeera. These areas host most of the small and medium industries in Bahrain, in addition to industrial service activities, workshops and warehouses.
